PRESIDIO THEATRE OF SAN FRANCISCO- w/ Hornberger + Worstell. 2017
In 1939 the United States Army opened the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco. The single-screen movie theatre featured a small stage and an auditorium seating approximately 900 people. Along with regular movie screenings for army personnel, the venue also hosted celebrities and various special events. The theatre continued it’s use until 1995 when the Army left the Presidio.
Hornberger + Worstell was asked to renovate the building to serve as a multipurpose space for live theatre, dance, music, film and other events. To serve this purpose, the existing building was slightly expanded and the stage was moved forward. Underneath the existing auditorium a new basement was excavated which now holds the dressing rooms and offices. Connected together at the west side of the existing building, there are two new pavilions containing the public elevator leading down to the new restrooms, rehearsal space, changing rooms, green room, offices and storage spaces. I was involved in the later stages of the design, the mechanical coordination, creation of egress diagrams and general document preparation.
