OZOLINI CABIN- Competition entry w/ Kasey Elliott. 2018
The scope of the project was to design a small 15m² cabin to accommodate one person for a few days. Located in the woods of nearby Riga, the structure was to be replicated anywhere in the forest adjacent to the owner’s farm, where city dwellers would have the opportunity to learn the teamaking craft while living within the surrounding serene forest.
The cabin was designed as a place of solitude in which there is space and time to embrace nature and take a break from the busyness of life outside the forest walls. Within the one room cabin there are areas to write, draw, read and meditate. At the heart of the cabin is the pechka oven which not only provides warmth, light and nourishment but also designates uses within the cabin. The massive chimney wall separates the living area from the entrance, while the multi-use oven provides a heated nook for sleeping above the cooking niches. Tucked away in-between the roof rafters, the sleeping area becomes a retreat- a dim and cozy meditative niche of it’s own. During the summer, the south facing glass panels open up to extend the small meditation floor space out to the deck and encompass the views of the forest beyond.
